KOB/KABELJOU

The Summer fish are here, and it's a favourite amongst Rock & Surf anglers on the South African coast. These preditor fish are known to be strong and aggesive and that's what makes them fun to target. Most kob species are voracious, shoaling predators and some species have become highly specialised for feeding in a muddy, murky environment. They are also known to feed better in low light conditions such as sunrise and sunset, night time and working water like sandbanks or inner reefs. The South Easter brings in that murky colour, concentrating the organisms in a specific nearshore area, attracting the smaller bait fish which attracts the preditor fish, and this is why it's cosidered more of Summer specie. Their lateral line system is very well developed and this, in conjunction with the sensory barbles which some have on their snouts, makes the kob less reliant on sight when feeding. Small fish, molluscs such as squid and Octopus are all eaten by the various kob species. This is what we focus on triggering those feeding senses and getting the bite, and why it is so exciting targeting kob!

WATER READING

"Water reading for fishing is a skill where you observe the water color, swell, formation and movement to identify promising spots for fish, such as deeper gutters, sand banks, and areas where baitfish are present. Wind direction is also important because certain winds heats the water up and give it colour, while other winds do the opposite. Barometric pressure also plays a big role to indicate when the fish will be feeding or not. By understanding these factors, you can choose when and where to cast for different species and increase your chances of success more regularly.

THE FRESHER THE BAIT THE QUICKER THE PULL

Buying fresh white mussel or a box of Sardine's... is not fresh bait. Catching your own live bait, or pumping sand prawns...that's what we talking about! You can never beat bait that you can harvest yourself, catching Chokka in a harbour, or Live bait with a cast net, digging your own Wonderworm or White mussel or pumping sandprawn or Bloodworm.. that's what you call fresh bait. There is also a difference between Redbait bought in a store and rotten Redbait that you pick up on the beach! Now I understand that these thing is not possible for everyone, but harvesting your own bait is defenitely a advantage and also no better feeling when You catch fish on that bait You worked hard to get. You do need a Fishing license, bait license and Cast net license for all of the above but defenitely cheaper than buying bait on every trip! We also do bait collecting sessions with our fishing sessions, as this is a very valuebale tool to learn.
